Saturday, October 17: Educators, librarians, and book lovers, join this special event where author and artist Pablo Leon will receive the 2026 Américas Award for his YA novel Silenced Voices: Reclaiming Memories from the Guatemalan Genocide. 

On September 23, 2026, we hosted our third annual conversation with contemporary Central American authors at Busboys and Poets in Washington, D.C., featuring Anna Lapera, John Manuel Arias, Ana Patricia Rodríguez, Diana Rojas, and Jared Lemus.

The 2026 Américas Award committee selected Silenced Voices: Reclaiming Memories from the Guatemalan Genocide by Pablo Leon for their top children’s and young adult book award.

Our Communities, Our Histories: Engaging Oral History Praxis Across the Salvadoran Diaspora will feature Salvadoran scholars discussing the role of oral history in building the emerging field of Central American Studies.

Jonathan Peraza Campos was invited by Dr. Theresa Alviar-Martin to give a workshop for teachers participating in Kennesaw State University’s Education for Sustainability and Human Rights Fellowship in June of 2026. 

We are pleased to share several new and forthcoming titles on Central America and Central Americans in the United States. Two of the titles (Mani Semilla and Avocado Dreams) are by Teach Central America advisors Anna Lapera and Ana Patricia Rodríguez.

In February 2026, Jonathan Peraza Campos, the program specialist for Teaching Central America, visited Springdale, Arkansas, to facilitate a day-long workshop on immigration and Latinx/Central American history for the Alliance for Immigrant Respect and Education (AIRE). 

On September 24th, 2025, we filled every seat at Busboys and Poets in Washington, D.C. for an evening with author and artist Pablo Leon as he discussed his new YA graphic novel, Silenced Voices: Reclaiming Memories from the Guatemalan Genocide.

Thanks to the dedicated efforts of interns Olvin Abrego Ayala and Eli Hertzler-McCain, along with advisors Marcy Campos and Miriam Elizabeth Villanueva — we added more than 150 new resources to the Teaching Central America site this summer.

These include lessons on Panama and the Darién Gap; themed collection on immigration, LGBTQ+ identify, and climate justice; and country collections on Belize, Costa Rica, and Panama.

Sacred Heart students and the wider community are beaming with pride because their book, Historias y dibujos: Obras de estudiantes de la Escuela del Sagrado Corazón, is now available to purchase online and eight copies are a part of the D.C. public library’s permanent collection!

On November 9, 2022 Teaching Central America, a project of Teaching for Change, hosted an educator workshop focused on Indigenous Central America.

On Saturday, March 19, 2022, Columbia University’s K-12 Outreach Program in the Institute of Latin American Studies held the second of three seminars on the topic  Beyond War, Migration & Violence: Celebrating Central America’s Knowledge and Cultural Production.
